A Beginners Guide to Theatre
So, you want to go to the theatre. You are ready to experience the sounds, the sights, and the emotions that come with life on the stage. But before you get comfortable and get lost in the storyline, you have some questions. It’s understandable — going to the theatre is very different from seeing a movie.
Here we have everything you need to know about your first experience, including the answers to the most common questions. Consider this your beginner’s guide to theatre.
What are the Best Shows to See?
The opportunities you are presented with onstage are limitless. From plays and musicals to operas and ballets, cabaret and Broadway concerts, there is something for everyone. These stage shows may be a hysterical comedy, a romantic love story, a satirical performance, a historical drama, and so much more.
You can only truly determine whether you enjoy something by allowing yourself to experience it. That means don’t dismiss the power and emotion of a musical just because you’d prefer to not hear singing. It may actually become your favorite type of performance.

How Do You Buy Tickets to the Theatre?
How you buy tickets to the theatre will depend on the venue. Traditionally, this involved making a trip to the theatre’s box office to select your tickets and seats. Things are different today. It is now more common (and convenient) to visit the theatre’s virtual box office found on their website to purchase the tickets online.
Want to get the greatest experience while saving time and money? Invest in season tickets. This will get you access to a variety of shows throughout the season.
What Do You Wear to the Theatre?
Most theatres will not have a dress code that you must adhere to, but they do recommend that you dress appropriately. In other words, avoid overly casual attire — leave the pajama bottoms, shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, flip flops, and so forth at home.
Formal attire is not required unless specified.
Keep in mind that the temperature can vary in theatres so you will want to make sure you have a sweater with you just in case. Dressing in layers is the most ideal option to ensure you are comfortable for the duration of the program.
How Long Will the Show Last?
Every theatrical experience will vary in length, depending on what it is. Though, as a general rule of thumb, you can expect a play or musical to last between two to three hours on average. Operas may last a little longer.
Nearly all theatres will give you an intermission somewhere around the halfway point in the show. This reduces the chance of interruptions as the audience is urged to remain seated throughout the performance — unless during this break time.
The Day of Your Show: What to Know
On the day of your show, you will want to plan your time accordingly. Many theatres will not allow late arrivals in until intermission so be sure to show up early. What’s more, it gives you time to check out the theatre, mingle, and find your seat without feeling rushed or discombobulated.
Below are a few things you should know while here:
Silence your phone and other devices before the show begins.
Ushers should be available to help you find your seat or anything else you need while at the theatre.
Food and drinks may or may not be allowed in the theatre itself, but may be available before the show and during intermission. Be sure to check your theatre’s rules.
If the performance is interactive, take part.
Finally, always, always, applaud the cast and everyone involved in the show. It takes a lot to put on a production and the audience applause is the gold star.
