The Art of Stage Lighting in Theatre
While some acts may use the pitch black of darkness to make a bold statement, most prefer to light up the stage. This draws the eyes of the audience and enhances the overall theatre experience.
But a light is never just a light when it comes to stage lighting. It is intentional — and meant to show movement, create moods, and tell a story.
Come with us as we take a closer look at the art of stage lighting in theatre.
The Four Main Functions of Stage Lighting
There are many different types of lighting, such as front lights, side lights, high-side lights, backlights, and downlights. They are used in addition to what is taking place on the stage, rather than simply showing the action. In other words, they are not there just to provide visibility.
When used effectively, formal stage lighting can be broken down into four main functions.
Visibility. In its most basic form, the function of stage lighting is to light the stage. It is to direct the focus of the audience to what is taking place. After all, the audience won’t be able to see what is going on if they are sitting in a dark theatre. It is important to keep in mind that not everything on the stage needs to be lit up at all times.
Plausibility. By definition, something that is plausible is something that could happen or something that is believable. In art, plausibility would be considered Realism. While many stage shows are believable stories, they most definitely are not all realistic.
Composition. Composition refers to using the lights to tell the story – either with a full or empty stage. Consider a musical composition that brings all the different parts and theories together to create something incredible.
Mood. By using different lighting techniques, a mood can be created that will not only be seen, but felt by the audience.
Painting the Stage Like a Canvas
Those who are skilled in the art of stage lighting know that it is capable of so much more beyond these basic functions.
With the push of a button, the stage can be transformed – and the audience can feel it. One must draw on many techniques to find the perfect balance.
Stage lighting can reinforce what is taking place in the action. For instance, during a heartbreaking scene, lighting techniques can further reinforce what the actor is feeling. What’s more, lighting can be used to set the date and time of the show as well as signal the end of a scene — or the end of the climax. Of course, it can also be used to heighten the climax, too!
Finally, stage lighting brings life. It can create a 3-dimensional visual that you want the audience to see.
