What Separates Theatre From The Other Arts

There are so many different types of arts and ways that individuals can express their creative sides. The idea of this expression has been around for much longer than any of us - for hundreds of years, in fact. They say that art reflects the state of the outer world while looking more closely at the inner world of the artist. It is the expressions from so many individual sources that make our world so colorful. 

Even though all art forms use expressions and interpretations, they do so differently. Theatre most of all.

The Wide World of The Arts

As individuals, we are all unique. So it only makes sense that we would require different types of art forms in order to release our creative energy. Let’s take a look at all the arts. 

Literature. Poetry, drama, story. It is a written form of art.

What is Theatre?

Theatre comes from the Greek root of the word “to see.” It is an art form that allows for the planned performance to be displayed on a stage for the entertainment of others. It is a chance to tell a story through acting. But theatre is not limited to just speech. It can use music, dance, sound, gesture - or any combination of these and others. 

Theatre takes on many different forms, too. There are operas and ballets, musicals and plays. Even more theatre forms include mime, comedy, improv, performance art, and others. 

The idea behind it all is to bring an audience together to enjoy a performance. That is what theatre is all about -- allowing the actors to transform in character while allowing the spectators to drift into another world, if only for a couple of hours. It is left up to the audience to think, comprehend, and feel the performance on their own. 

How Theatre is Different From Other Arts

Theatre is different from other arts because it is movement and voice and telling a story. It is bringing words from a page to life. But it is so much more than that. It incorporates many different art forms into one piece of art. 

Think about it. You can go to the theatre and see individuals using speech (that may have been taken from a piece of literature) and emotion while acting on stage. They may be singing to one another. There may be musical sounds or dance included. Even an opera or a musical, though, is more than just music. Yet, these things are all part of the theatre. 

This distinguished, well-rounded artform that is designed to hold the attention of others for long periods of time - and be remembered for a lifetime - sets it apart on its own. This is theatre.
