Best Shows for Newcomers to Theatre to See

Theatre has been a source of entertainment since the ancient Greek civilization and even longer ago. Performers have been thrilling audiences for centuries and theatre continues to be a significant contribution to the arts. Broadway Theatre in New York City is a multi billion dollar industry. And community theaters throughout the world keep the spirit of storytelling alive, providing local opportunities for patrons to experience the magic of theatre.

If you’re new to theatre, or if you’re trying to introduce theatre to a friend, family member, or significant other, it’s important to choose the right show for the first experience. You need a show that will grab your attention with an easy-to-follow storyline. The following list includes some of the best shows for newcomers to look for at local theaters.

Chicago

Set in the city of Chicago in the roaring ‘20s, this show is an instant attention grabber. It involves murder, scandal, romance, and jealousy. A cabaret style show, the primary setting is a nightclub/speakeasy during prohibition. Newcomers to theatre will be enthralled from the beginning to the final curtain call.

Hamilton

One of the most popular shows currently, this musical has drawn newcomers to the theatre like never before. With it’s hip-hop style songs putting a modern twist on history, it draws in a different kind of audience. Set during the American Revolution, this depiction of the events that led to the famous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, is an excellent theatrical interpretation of a pivotal time in American history.

Little Shop of Horrors

A great show for Halloween and any other time of the year, Little Shop of Horrors is wacky and comical. Set in what appears to be a boring flower shop, all seems well until a strange carnivorous plant begins devouring people. It has fun, catchy songs and plenty of humor to keep everyone entertained.

Mamma Mia!

Featuring some of ABBA’s biggest hits from the disco era, Mamma Mia is the story of a young woman approaching her wedding day with hopes of having her father to walk her down the aisle. The only problem is that she’s not sure exactly who that may be. Set in the Greek islands where her mother works as a hotelier, she invites three men from her mother’s past with the goal of identifying her biological father. Full of romance, laughter, and catchy songs you’ll be singing for days after the show.

Grease

Most people have seen the movie, which helps to make this a familiar story for theatre newbies. Set in the ‘50s with hoop skirts, saddle shoes, and greasy hair, the story follows a group of high school friends as they navigate the trials and tribulations of youth. Car races, gang rivalry, and an epic love story make this show fun for everyone.

The Miracle Worker

The Miracle Worker is the famous story of Helen Keller, who was born both blind and deaf, and her teacher Anne Sullivan who devised a way for Helen to understand and communicate with others. What seemed impossible, Anne Sullivan made possible through creativity and positive thinking. This is an incredibly moving play exhibiting true historical events of the amazing bond between a child and her teacher.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

You can’t make a list of theatrical shows without including at least one by Shakespeare. While many Shakespeare plays may be difficult to interpret for someone new to theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is fairly easy to follow. This story involves the misuse of a love potion that causes two men to fall in love with the same woman. Confusion, jealousy, and tempers fly in this classic comedy.
